New Smithfield Recreation & Aquatic Center Opens
After years of planning and collaboration between the Town of Smithfield and the Johnston County Board of Education, the new Smithfield Recreation & Aquatic Center has opened. This 70,000 square foot facility will be a multi-purpose building for the Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department and the school system.
The center is located on Booker Dairy Rd., adjacent to the Smithfield/Selma High School which has a new field house, double gym, locker rooms and weight room. The remainder of the center includes racketball courts, exercise room, all purpose room, meeting room, offices for the recreation department and a competition size pool and kid’s play pool.
See attached photos of children playing in the kiddie pool. The facility will be used for meetings, sporting events, and social activities for the entire county. As well as, the local hotel community will be able to offer day passes for a fee to visitors.
This $12 million dollar facility will be an incredible asset for the entire county and will have an impact in bringing sporting groups to the county. For more information contact the Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department, 919-934-2148.
