Living History Program and Artillery Demonstrations scheduled at Bentonville Battlefield on May 17, 2008
Come listen to Civil War re-enactors discuss camp life and the role of the common Civil War soldier during Bentonville Battlefield’s Summer Seasonal Living History Program, May 17, 2008. Costumed living historians portraying the 18th NC and 53rd Pa Regiments will be on hand to give living history demonstrations, providing insight into the lives of Civil War soldiers. Visitors can watch musket demonstrations at 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30, listen to a talk on uniforms and equipment, and walk through a small military camp. This living history program is designed to allow our visitors to interact with our costumed volunteers on more of a personal level then during a conventional re-enactment. The program will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday only.
The highpoint of any living history event is the artillery. Come see the big gun fire, and hear it roar, at Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site during the site’s Artillery Demonstrations. Field artillery played a key role in the Battle of Bentonville, the last major Confederate offensive of the Civil War. The cannon fire was so intense; that according to one witness it “literally barked the trees, cutting of limbs as if by hand.” Although outgunned by Union forces, Confederate artillerymen made excellent use of their fortified positions to disrupt the Union advance for several hours. Come see site staff and volunteers demonstrate the firing of a Three-Inch Ordnance Rifle, a typical Civil War field piece at 11:30, 1:30, and 3:30.
