Tourism Authority Awards Capital Grants
The Johnston County Tourism Authority recently approved five Capital Grants for tourism related projects in the county. Two grants were awarded to projects in Clayton. The Clayton Center Digital Signage System received $5,250 for hardward and software to announce events, meetings and upcoming performances in the auditorium. Also, the Clayton Historical Association received $1,100 for the match amount needed to install a Carolina’s Campaign Civil War Marker in Clayton. In 2004, the Tourism Authority supported the marker campaign for the nine other markers in the Bentonville Community to Smithfield and Selma.
For those interested in the Civil War heritage in the county, the Bentonville Battlefield 143rd: War so Terrible Event will be held this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16. Costumed living historians will show the lives of the average North Carolina Civil War soldier through infantry and artillery demonstrations. Evening tours of the Harper House will be 6:30-9pm. Other grants awarded were $50,000 to the Benson Museum of Local History for renovations and exhibit installation, $17,500 to the Johnston Community College Arboretum for a new Southern Garden and $15,440 to Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation for the renovation and repair of the Historic Hastings House, which was a field office for General Johnston prior to the Battle of Bentonville, March 19-21, 1865.
