So much to do…so little time!
One of the reasons I am so excited to write this blog is to get more information out in the Triangle region on the things to do in Johnston County. As the official marketing organization for Johnston County, when I hear people say at local events, “they should advertise this event, it is wonderful”. I know that our limited resources reach out in as many ways that we can with 40,000 calendar of events, our web site, advertising on the Visitnc.com web site, direct mail postcards, press releases, and advertising. I have to conclude, we all are over worked, have busy lives with children, church and community and just too many choices for wonderful events in the Triangle Region. So if you didn’t hear of some of the local festivals taking place in the area, here’s what you missed. And we hope that next year, we will see you in Johnston County.
The months of September/October are festival season for us starting off with the Clayton Harvest Festival in Downtown Clayton followed by the largest festival in the county, Benson Mule Days where over 60,000 people enjoy the small town charm of Benson. Selma held the third annual East Coast Antique Show and local shops welcomed thousands of shoppers searching for collectibles and antiques. In Smithfield, the Ava Gardner Film Festival was held for the first time this year, and premiered several documentaries and short films. And all that in two weeks in September.
October starts off every year with the Selma Railroad Days Festival that celebrates the rail history in the county. More local farming heritage events include the Micro Fireman’s Carnival and Antique Tractor Show & Auction in the Archer Lodge community. For some Civil War history, Bentonville Battlefield held a Fall Civilian Living History Program….all these events were the first weekend in October.
There is still time to make plans to visit several October events including: Doc Watson at The Clayton Center, Oct. 20, Laughing with the Legends, Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, Oct. 20, Historical Ghost Walk, Downtown Smithfield, Oct. 25, Clayton Fear Farm, Oct. 19-21 and Oct. 26-31, Tobacco Farm Life Museum Fall Heritage Day, Oct. 27, Four Oaks Oak-Tober Fest, Oct. 27, Trick or Treat off the Street, Carolina Premium Outlets, Oct. 31 and Clayton’s Halloween Parade, Oct. 31.
They say “word of mouth” is still the best form of advertisement, so spread the word to your family and friends, that a nice outing for the weekend is a visit to Johnston County for festivals, events, and shopping!

I am always on the lookout for antiques for my house. Garage sales seem to be the best place to find them at a reasonable price.
